I think that Apple (and I mean Steve Jobs) has learned a lesson from the past - they have the small (but gaining) marketshare with their computers because they didn't adapt their platform to the space when they has the change in the 80's/90's. He's not going to make that same mistake with the iPhone.

And I also remember when the Razr price dropped from$499 to $299 -or less- within the first 3 months. No rebate for those people.

The idea of an evangelist is a good one - Jobs won't be around forever and it would be great to have someone highly visible that's not so polarizing. Someone who could utilize the blogsphere, take care of crisis management and expand the customer base. Which is what I believe the price drop is about.

I'm lost, why is this a crisis?

I have been a loyal Apple fanatic since '82 when I started programming on a II, had I the money I would have bought into every new goodie they came out with every time without regret, I would have a pyramid of ever shrinking iPods sitting on top of my mac mini sitting on top of my cube, having payed full ??whocareshowmuch?? markup for them.

whats the mark up on a Bently? dont you think they could sell those for just a few thousand less? I mean really they can afford it cant they?

If you have to ask how much it costs and if you care that the price free falls tomorrow, you dont belong here, go buy a back pack for your zune, tom tom, and motorola cell phone and quit whining.

I wanted to be an early adopter but could not afford to, I cant afford to get one without the insurance either, so I have to wait, my sister, no where near the mac fanatic I am, but learning, got the very first one in our area, boyfriend camping out for 6 hours in the mall and all.

she broke it, had to pay a hefty sum to repair it, and now the price drop.

Her kids are grown, she has the cash, she really doesnt care at all, she knew damn well that she was setting fire to $600 the day she got it in her hands and it was worth every penny.

its a Bently and she got to have it now now now, not 4 sensible months from now.

so if that drove away 'loyal' mac fanatics, so be it, steve doesnt need them, he needs market share, he needs customers that respond to greatness and arent afraid to burn cash to have the very best.

I want you to hold that iPhone in the palm of your hand, in 1977, and tell me how $600 could put that much power in that small a space.

he could have sold them for $5000 and you know it.

HAHAHAHAHA-
I think the iPhone is cool, but not as much as the suckers with disposable income who are now boo-hooing over their 2 month old toy that has just dropped 200 bucks. Whoever had this phone before now had it as a status symbol, not a communications tool (not saying it doesn't get used to communicate, that's just not why they bought it).
And to the Apple loyal people who will just buy anything from apple because it's from apple, well, i think you know how that goes. I need automatons loyal to my brand.
I would have bought the 600 dollar iPhone if it didn't have theses 2 GAPING holes in it's programming- 1-No exchange server available (smart apple, real smart. Steve doesn't ever, EVER want to share)
2- No GPS (!?).
Their internet when not in a wifi hotspot blows too.

As for announcing the 200 dollar drop the same time the new iPod came out? Probably not the smartest thing, wait two more monthe, sell a crapload of the iPod nano's or whatever their called, then when those suckers have forked an arm and leg over, then drop the iPhone price.

This article misses on two important points: one, if Apple can give away $2 billion so easily, this means it has a huge amount of margin on iPhone to fall back upon.

Second, the price drop also signifies future competition anticipated by Apple from the likes of Google Phone and others. It's true there's no competition right now but Jobs is looking far ahead with this drop.

I wrote on these two points a few days ago in iPhone's $200 Price Cut = $2 Billion Customer Handout: What does it mean for Apple and why did they do it.

Steve Jobs was interviewed by USAToday (Sept. 5, 2007): http://www.usatoday.com/tech/products/2007-09-05-jobs-qanda_N.htm .

“What do you say to customers who just bought a new iPhone for $599? Sorry?”
A: “That's technology. If they bought it this morning, they should go back to where they bought it and talk to them. If they bought it a month ago, well, that's what happens in technology. “

Twenty four hours later and a ton of bad publicity, the apology letter…

So nobody at Apple thought the price cut would be an issue or did Jobs simply dismissed any PR concerns and got burned?

great article - comments sent to my son follow:Steve has really blown it. A $100 back is nice but he missed the issue. It is tangible vs intangible. In fact Apple's great leadership has come from how they nurture the intangible. The $100 solved the tangible. But he did not solve Mom chiding me for buying the Iphone early, nor the ribbing I'm getting from my golfing buddy's who didn't buy an Iphone. Steve needs to give the early birds some kind of advance down load free of software that will other wise cost money - could be a free down load of the up coming GPS software that will be sold as a an Itunes download (my opinion). Then he needs to nurture the early birds with a direct mail program - forming us into a "renewed loyal" Apple "disciple Club." In effect give us back our "cutting edge 'braggn' rights."
Love Dad

But he did not solve Mom chiding me for buying the Iphone early, nor the ribbing I’m getting from my golfing buddy’s who didn’t buy an Iphone. Steve needs to give the early birds some kind of advance down load free of software that will other wise cost money – could be a free down load of the up coming GPS software that will be sold as a an Itunes download (my opinion). Then he needs to nurture the early birds with a direct mail program – forming us into a “renewed loyal” Apple “disciple Club.” In effect give us back our “cutting edge ‘braggn’ rights.”
Love Dad

Me, I've found it MUCH easier to be sympathetic and even admiring of Apple with the pugnacious and perennially overreaching Guy Kawasaki out of the picture.

It was always my perception that people like Kawasaki might be good at rousing the faithful -- but it was his evangelism that alientated people like me.

Exactly how many time has Microsoft or any other technology company credited anybody. Have we forgotten that the RAZR phone was $499 at one point and ZOOMED down to a mere $59? As to the person who had the phone a mere 2 weeks...well, they qualify for the $200 refund. Me...I knew I was going to get screwed and I did. How much was your first HD tv? This is a complete non-event and the media is beating the drums like it means anything.

it isn't suprising to find ths comments section for this page reveals that it's nothing more than a blog. the only people i've heard complaining about the apple iPhone price drop have been bloggers and "journalists" (who, if you scratch the surface, are badly paid nerds who were bloggers a few weeks ago or will be in a few weeks down the road).

all the actual iPhone owners i know... and i know more than a few... have no problem with their phone or it's price or the rebate in store credit.

great phone. great price (now greater). great deal.

when you own one... your complaints will be based on something.

Honestly, it wasn't much off here as what happened to the eMac, back in 2002.

History has it Apple released a single public model around the 1st of June, 2002. By August there was not only a price drop but the upcoming Mac OS 10.2. Apple then upgraded all eMac models by dropping CDRW model for eMac Combo and +200 for a SuperDrive Model.

To tell what happened to me is I lost even the discount of 10.2 of which I was expected to pay the full $129. Then the upgraded eMac line included a Combo Drive for $200 off the previous release of the CDRW model. So my losses amounted to $329 for a non-DVD model.
