Brian, had you written nothing else in defense of the SMNR, this description would have been enough:

The Social Media Release is nimble, scalable, and customizable. It can be written for journalists, bloggers, and/or for customers, and is simply rooted in the social tools and channels that help socialize the content for discovery, interpretation, and sharing.

That's a very concise statement as to how the SMNR format springs from and adapts to the parameters of the media it attempts to serve. There's where I see the value and your explication is very convincing.

Case dismissed!

Great article.Ihave to translate it to spanish!!(if you have no problem with that) at the company I work for we are starting on this and my boss doesn't quite understand what it is and why it works -usually asks me why he hired me-, even when he knows we run a coulple of successful social media campaings. Now you are one of my obliged references.

Brian,

That's probably the best info I've read on the social media release. But what thing I've learned is what may be considered 'newsworthy' or not newsworthy is difficult to define. People have different interests at different times even if the PR topic is relevant to their needs or not. I have done tests with a number of PR companies for an Industrial Supply MRO site I manage and they all had different opinions on what a newsworthy release should be. Go figure.

Love the post Brian. I think it all boils down to a "95/5 rule," something I just invented. In PR, we all discuss every tool as if it applies to everything we do. Nothing does. An SMR isn't manna from heaven for that CRM vendor you've been struggling to get coverage for. Saying it will is malpractice.

Back to 95/5. Seems SMRs really have power for only 5 percent of releases, not bad if yours is in that 5 percent. And, the 95/5 rule is even seen in things like PR awards. Wow, XX big agency won a Silver Anvil for a campaign for Milk or Viagra. Hmmm, my kids could do that campaign and get results.

We all know that 95 percent of PR work is toiling in obscurity, gutting it out with the three reporters left covering your space or a topic that interests nobody in social networks (or people who read sociology textbooks for that matter ;-))

I guess what I'm saying is that a jury of your peers probaly has trouble relating to SMRs (and other "must do" PR tools) because they are really only relevant 5 percent of the time, for 5 percent of clients. Now, if you go to court with something that is really meaningful to the other 95 percent and I'm sure ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN and all the cables will show up. Then we'll see some real courtroom drama.

Great post, Brian.

I like that your post also subtly makes the point that a lot of 'news' releases really aren't newsworthy so organizations shouldn't issue them. This then creates the necessary time for organizations to work on these additional formats for their real news releases.

Hey Greg, thanks! You're just saying that because I opened with how you helped evolve the PR industry ;)

Honestly, I don't need to call witnesses for cross examination. I'm using SMRs right now and they work for me. That's the only reason I need to continue to experiment with them.

Excellent opening statement, Brian. Now that the prosecution and the defense have outlined the case, we will both be expected to call witnesses. This is where cross-examination should uncover the facts.

Bravo Brian, great post. All too often I'm faced with the same critiques of the SMNR. Half of the push-back is merely from the fear of change, the other half is from the lack of understanding around what Social Media truly means for PR. Thanks for continually educating.

--Kyle
