It will be interesting to see how press releases evolve as a result of this ruling. As you point out, releases are not anywhere near obsolete yet, but the means of distribution are adapting to technological and social changes in the media environment. A lot of people fail to appreciate that press releases do more than simply provide financial data: they are one way (of many) for the organization to tell its story to key publics. If those publics prefer to receive those stories and data online, it only makes sense for the rules to allow it.

Great post.

I think this is a really interesting development. Some people still scoff at the idea of banks, for example, using social media. It will also be a great opportunity for financial organisations to by-pass the traditional media. If they can build up their financial blog and everyone is reading that, why worry about what the traditional media is saying so much?
The points about the social media releases are really good. However I think it is really important to emphasise that bloggers like personal information. So social media releases have to be compelling and interesting. Otherwise they will get nowhere despite the potential that SMRs offer them.

So can you explain why Berkshire Hathaway bought BusinessWire? And why exactly can't Yahoo Finance and Google offer free distribution of releases or anything a company feels like sharing?

I have plenty of friends at the wire services, but I've said to their faces (and with Brian at 2007 New Comm Forum in Vegas) that the social media world will not pay the staggering prices for distribution when close to free sounds fair. I don't think SMR is the big $ winner with this SEC update. RSS is the big winner and continues to be more important than a company's standard Web site copy.

For my PR clients, cost was always key and I guess compliance and communicating to stakeholders were there too. I always laughed at the Wire claims of connections to journalists who subscribe to feeds - well, OK, but that's what my clients paid me and PR agencies to pitch (not blast). That's always been my gripe on how you, Chris Heuer and Todd Defren/Van Hoosear have over-hyped the SMR - yawn - now a social media pitch would be useful ;)

I really like Tom Foremski's take on the news - especially since he ran with my Utterz post and tip: http://www.siliconvalleywatcher.com/mt/archives/2008/07/sec_likely_to_c.php

Solis: Hope to see you soon - Vegas or otherwise!

Brian, right on! This is great news. I've not been a fan of current distribution options anyway.

For your readers I'm offering access to our alpha version of the PitchEngine Social Media Release Builder. While you and others have made huge strides in education, I believe we can advance the process by removing some of the math. At http://pitchengine.com PR pros can build and share releases for free.

Simply email me from the homepage for the access code. First 1000 will get access. Let's make industry change.
