Thanks Joe, it's a nice visualization. Although, I see things differently in regards to the distinction and overlap of personal vs. professional brand. LinkedIn isn't really the most social network and Facebook is rapidly becoming the network of choice for professional "personal" branding.

Very well put. " Truth be told, any search engine, whether social or traditional, is the resume" This is the new world we live in whether we like it or not so why not maintain a more professional "you" online. You also mentioned being proactive, and already having preliminary online brands we do not even know about. Thats why it is so important to be proactive and making sure what the web says about us is accurate. In recent experience I have found personavita.com a great place to brand myself and maintain who I am online in every facet of my life. ITs better than maintaining 12 sites all depicting something a little different.

Interesting. The old "publish or perish" adage now applies to the world wide web? Let's just hope we remember that quality is more important than quantity regarding personal branding. Because in our world, consistency is key, and "bad publicity is still publicity" doesn't apply here.
http://blog.jungle8.com/2007/08/10/brand-yourself-doll/

Technology's moving faster than people's abilities to absorb and understand the power that they now have to create content and disseminate it.

People are using the internet as if it's a telephone, when actually, what they're doing is broadcasting to anyone that cares to stop by their blog or the comments they leave on other people's blogs or on microblogging services.

At this point, even video and audio clips are being posted to the net which people THINK aren't being read or watched, but as you state i the post, the first thing a company (or potential girlfriend) is going to do is GOOGLE YOU.

Interestingly enough, depending on your chosen field of expertise, having ZERO presence on Google can be as damning as having a negative presence, because at this point, it's similar to "not being published". It's not likely that someone who claims to be an expert in social media, for instance, won't have given many, many public opinions about tech available for potential clients to judge him or her by.

Some great thoughts.

The problem I have personally with my own online breadcrumb trail is a common name shared with many other people. There's no problem with people finding MY social media clues scattered all over the web to build up a picture of me, the trouble comes when people confuse me with the other Bill Bennetts.zjdjr

I've been referring to this as my "internet footprint" for quite sometime.
Mostly, because I've spent the better part of 10 years NOT having one that was associated with me by name or image in any way.
But in the 21st century, that can work against you just as much as having the wrong footprint can.

As of January of this year, I came out from behind the curtain. But I have been very cautious since then regarding the shaping of my online footprint.

I would disagree that GenY has been raised on this... they have been raised to be constantly forming their footprint - but conscious of what it's impact could be in the long run? Not so much.
Most of them believe that down the road "if everyone has drunken pictures in their myspace past it will be no big deal" - trust me, I spent much time trying to convince many CIS students otherwise. Unfortunately, what they will have to learn the hard way is that they will suffer in comparison to their peers who have been very cautious about their internet footprint over the long haul.

It is the generation after that which will hopefully learn from the mistakes of their predecessors.

But then again, youth seldom believes that they will have to carry their sins with them into adulthood... before 10 years ago, it was true, to a point. Now? Not so much.

I use Google all the time to find out more about people - and to make sure that my on-line brand is being properly projected. The best defense is a good Personal Branding offense! http://is.gd/UVh
