Great tool and really interesting methodology. We do some interesting work with our sister company VML around SEER, which is a web crawler to monitor conversations around a topic or brand and understand how information is cascading.
regardless of tool or approach, active listening and reaction is critical to reputation management.

Great service. The Backtype guys are also really good guys. I’ve enjoyed watching them bring the service to life. From the first time they told me about it I saw an immediate value.

Some interesting potential market opportunities if they create some rapid user adoption and create a cool community around the product.

Interesting new service.
I wonder if it’s useful to put some kind of ranking on these services; e.g. is a blog post by a well known blogger worth more than a comment on the same blog, and where does a post on a social network fit. I believe (and blogged about here http://www.brendan-mcnulty.com/2008/09/how-sociable-blog-monitoring.html ) the necessity of being involved in the space, especially to understand your brand in this space.

But you have a finite amount of time to respond, and you’d like it to be as powerful as possible, so how to choose where to devote your efforts?

Brian, please, please, please. If you do one thing regarding monitoring, have a look at our business partners market sentinel (we are in the uk).

Their live buzz tool does all of the above at the very least but also measures the sentiment of every comment.

Once "trained" to recognise positive or negative comments the system is 80% accurate for the sentiment of every keyword, blog post or forum comment it picks up.

This kind of understanding is perhaps the most important "metric" i use in my social media planning.
