Good post. A point here is that this is about SOCIAL as SNSs etc are used as part of individuals social lives. This suggests that a commercial move may be seen as an intrusion and rejected by users. Who wants to be sold something while chatting with a friend (ok viral ads - I know..).
I'm a fan of another blogger on social media - like the social take she has. You may enjoy a read.

http://properfacebooketiquette.blogspot.com/

Excellent post - and this is my favorite part... "It’s our job, duty, and responsibility to reach our community, their way, and teach others to do so along with us, whether it’s from within or externally. In addition, you have to represent much more than social prowess.". I find that in my dealings with Social Media and almost anything is the teaching part...

@Brian Solis - I am not a big fan of "Span of Control" to begin with. While all social media VP's might report to the CMO successfully in some companies - my point was that social media SHOULD be decentralized since social media is not always about any one area (marketing as example).

www.twitter.com/A_F

Brian, thanks for taking the time to write this blog and for sharing thoughts/ideas.

Two points you made that had the greatedst impact on me:

--For every Social Media expert, we must remember, that there are many more human beings out there who are not using social tools to communicate, but are still equally important to our bottom line. Therefore, our job is to connect our story and our value propositions to people wherever they go to discover and share information - even if it's in the real world.

--Social Media is a revelation that we the people have a voice and through the democratization of content and ideas, we can once again unite people around common passions, inspire movement, and ignite change.

Also, I saw your "Social Media Releases for PR" presentation earlier this week. We had a room full of people listening to the call ranging from web developers to public affairs and PR people to advertising account folks--demonstrating exactly what you said about several disciplines having a part in social media.

Thanks again.

Joanne Taylor, Director of PR
Drake Cooper, Boise

Wow everyone. Thank you for the support and incredible feedback. Let me do my best here to respond to everyone!

@egg marketing, that's right. it's always about learning. Thank you!

@chad richards, thanks! Mobile networks are becoming real time extensions and enhancements to existing social media communities while other dedicated networks also continue to emerge and gain traction.

@andrew finkle, well said. do you think that in some cases a CMO might also assume social responsibilities as well as the VPs in charge of their respective divisions?

@kiki, you're very welcome. thank you!

@ryan moede, I appreciate it. Lane is indeed someone who's helping reshape service and relationships between companies and customers.

@louis gray, Indeed. You are always right on point. And, it was a pleasure to speak with you in Vegas. Looking forward to the next time!

@brandon carlos, thank you!

@james bruni, I think you're right. Perhaps, I'll retitle it! Spread the word and continue to lead the way!

@karl long, looking forward to reading it. I'm still a proponent of anything that implies two-way interaction. Conversation, dialogue, discussion, etc. are much better than the technicality of the Read/Write Web. :)

@michael brito, Wow. Thank you! That means a lot...

@martin edic, Thanks!. Please upgrade my account to pro and i'll give you my feedback. I just signed up. Thanks and looking forward to it.

@thepuck, thank you sir.

@walt ribeiro, thank you so much. I really appreciate everything that Chris Brogan does for the industry. I'm proud to call him a friend.

@jane quigley thanks!!! Yes, exactly. That's the entire premise of this post. Social Media is just one piece of everything we need to do. I'd also add that the work we do in listening to and observing communities also feeds back into everything else we doo as well.

#jeff hogg, There are many reports that document a different work ethic between the generations. My only point is that there's a generation gap between the tools and ideologies behind one-to-may vs. one-to-one and many-to-many interaction.

@j-p voilleque thank you...aka The Conversation Prism

@brian elliot looking forward to reading your posts.

@adrian chan, well said.

@Rotkapchen, point well taken. Changed!

@alisa, thank you. you're right, the Web IS social. Looking forward to catching up at SXSW.

@josiah, thank you. hope it helps!

@richard jalichandra, Thank you very very much. That means more than I could explain. Looking forward to catching up as soon as possible. Keep up the good work at Technorati. I think you're making a big difference over there and more importantly, within the blogsophere.

@barbara, it was great to see you in vegas! yes, it's our job to carry the flag and lead the change. looking forward to your posts.
Brian - thanks for this phenomenal report! Social media is reinventing marketing and PR-everyday. As the old rules give way to new experiences, it's up to us to spread the word. That's why I'm writing about this post on my blog and including your work as a resource for my social media students.
@wiredprworks on twitter.com

thanks brian, been preaching this for a long long time on Socialized. Working as part of a strategy group, I have a motto that we keep "the web is social" (also the URL of my blog). there are so many implications for marketing, enterprise, communications, media to this very simple statement. look foward to seeing your Streams panel at SXSW, its a pet subject of mine.

Totally was all over this post and even Twee-commended it. Then I hit the comment about "constituents". Ouch! Conversations don't have constituents, nor do relationships. There was a filter missing on this otherwise stellar perspective.

My take...

Great post Brian. It's incredibly important that social media marketers realize that "joining the conversation" means literally that: talking!

There is a plethora of tools, sites, and services out there, and to newcomers the social media landscape must be mind-boggling indeed. Hence the importance of tracking and monitoring to supplement direct participation. Combined, these parallel strategies should help to translate engagement into impact.

cheers,
adrian
