A New Year is upon us and I think I’ll start off the New Year with a rededication to the Social Media Release (SMR), the Social Media Club, and why the hell all of this will matter to marketing, communications and PR professionals this year.
The truth is that somewhere along the way, a few of those who “got it” embraced it as their own, those who are just now learning about it are “not getting” it, and a few of us, are tirelessly working to get everyone up to speed for the betterment of traditional and social media press releases.
This isn’t an attempt at sensationalism, this is a clear message for all businesses, in every market – Engage or die! If you don’t, you’re competition will. Those who engage with customers and markets will cultivate loyalty in ways never before possible. Traditional marketers will lose, unless they embrace new media.
The key however, is finding ways to measure everything in ways that mean something at every level of corporate communications.
DEMOfall 06 is behind us and DEMO’07 (ha, 007) is just around the corner. I know of two companies already hoping to launch their new products at that event.
There was a last-minute addition to the line-up, which I didn’t cover in my last post. Mercora presented to Chris Shipley last week, and she just had to have them close out the event.

It’s time for a Ballroom Blitz as the music blared and the lights dimmed. In a dramatic fashion, images from previous events cycled through on the two gigantic screens on either side of the stage, leading up to Chris Shipley’s arrival.
Her presence, as always is nothing less than impressive.
This was STIRR ’s sixth event and there was no doubt that it was the biggest to date. In fact they had to move from Blue Chalk in Palo Alto to The Whisper Lounge in SF in order to accomodate the growth. In discussions with Sean Ness and Joanne Wan, estimates were easily placed at about 225.
Brian Solis is principal at Altimeter Group, a research firm focused on disruptive technology. A digital analyst, sociologist, and futurist, Solis has studied and influenced the effects of emerging technology on business, marketing, and culture. Solis is also globally recognized as one of the most prominent thought leaders and published authors in new media. His new book, What's the Future of Business (WTF), explores the landscape of connected consumerism and how business and customer relationships unfold and flourish in four distinct moments of truth. His previous book, The End of Business as Usual, explores the emergence of Generation-C, a new generation of customers and employees and how businesses must adapt to reach them. Prior to End of Business, Solis released Engage, which is regarded as the industry reference guide for businesses to market, sell and service in the social web.
