I just can’t believe it. On Friday afternoon, my Twitter stream was overflowing with Tweets and Retweets of what could only be best described as an outpouring or gushing of love and support for my new book by some of the world’s most recognized celebrities in the world. Seriously…WTF!?

Celebrity endorsements are nothing new. In the era of social media however, celebrities now possess the ability to reach people in online networks. The difference now is that static or passive audiences have become interactive and more importantly, people have become stakeholders in the media where connect and socialize. Celebrities are presented with opportunities to engage people on a peer-to-peer level. Doing so changes the dynamics of the relationship from a hierarchical celebrity-to-fan association to a flattened person-to-person connection. It also impressively scales the potential endorsement from a first degree reach of one-to-one to a multi-degree one-to-one-to-many social effect.
The power to analyze behavior and sentiment on Twitter and translate it into trends and direction is limited only by our powers of observation and imagination. As you may or may not know, I have assumed the role of data analyst at PeopleBrowsr, in addition to the other ventures I’m running or advising. Recently, I published The State of the Airline Industry on Twitter, the first in an ongoing series of Twitter-centric reports. Electric Artists released Tracking Twitter, a new app that is a real-time listing of the top brands, media, television, entertainment, and celebrities that the team is currently following on Twitter.
While this service offers appeal as a directory for consumers seeking their favorite brands and personalities on Twitter, it’s much more promising as a real-time monitor of how businesses, media properties, and celebrities are using Twitter – for better or for worse.
