Social Media is Rife with Experts but Starved of Authorities

Perhaps Lewis Carroll was peering into the looking glass when he wrote “Through the Looking Glass and What Alice Found There.” In it, we were introduced to Tweetle Dum and Tweetle Dee, a curious duo that always shared a fruitful, entertaining, and complementary conversational exchange even though they always agreed to battle each other.

Some suggest that the significance of Alice’s encounter with the twins explores how curiosity leads to the unknown and therefore, may not be worthy of pursuit.

This past weekend the Twitterverse spoke-out in exasperation and opposition against traditional media networks (CNN specifically) and the absence of instantaneous coverage of the Iranian election and the resulting fallout. “We the people” wanted real-time information regarding the violent protests that erupted on the streets of Iran and the stories probing potential foul play in the results. We took to Twitter to express discontent and to also uncover the real story as it was unfolding live through citizen journalism.

How Tweet It Is: @DellOutlet Banks $2 Million on Twitter

Good friend Richard Binhammer of Dell (@richardatdell) reached out to let me know that the company is releasing the latest financial figures for its @DellOutlet account on Twitter tonight.

Last December, the company generated over $1 million in revenue through @delloutlet by posting special offers and also nurturing customer relationships on Twitter. Today Dell reported over $2 million in sales through its popular @delloutlet presence.  @delloutlet currently boasts close to 625,000 followers seeking exclusive deals available only on the micro community.

Electric Artists released Tracking Twitter, a new app that is a real-time listing of the top brands, media, television, entertainment, and celebrities that the team is currently following on Twitter.

While this service offers appeal as a directory for consumers seeking their favorite brands and personalities on Twitter, it’s much more promising as a real-time monitor of how businesses, media properties, and celebrities are using Twitter – for better or for worse.

My friends over at HubSpot released the latest market data that reveals which tools and services people are flocking to when communicating on Twitter.

According to the research, most people interact on Twitter using Twitter.com from their browser of choice – almost half of all users in fact. Note to hubspot, would love to see that data broken out by browser.

Dell Deals with Twitter

In March 2008, Gary Vaynerchuck experimented with @santagaryvee on Twitter where he would announce special Wine Library deals and opportunities exclusively for his loyal followers on the popular micro community. While he slowly phased that activity back into his main Twitter streams, many companies were introduced to a new way to engage and harness enthusiasm among those potentially interested in something new and special.

Twitter has sparked its own ecosystem as it continues to rapidly emerge as a viable platform for online conversations, rivaling Facebook News Feeds for attention and interaction.

A group of helpful individuals launched Twictionary, a dictionary and/or translator, to help new tweeters and tweeps embrace and master the language powering the popular micro community and its underlying culture. Power Twitter users and those well versed in the language of the Twitterverse are also welcome to freely contribute their knowledge to help increase the value of the dictionary over time.

TweetSuite Links Conversations Between Blogs and Twitter

I’ve been observing Dan Zarrella‘s work from a distance for some time and this is the first post dedicated to his work. However, he is someone whom I also hope to collaborate with in the near-term.

Zarrella recently announced TweetSuite, a plugin for WordPress that integrates tweetback functionality into blogs. Much in the same way that trackbacks or linkbacks showcase inbound blogs linking to respective posts, tweetbacks monitor and display individual tweets that also feature links to specific blog content.
